Review of 2015

Review of 2015

I was delighted to be appointed as Gedore Torque's Managing Director in February this year, taking over from David Parsley, and as 2015 draws to a close, I look back over a challenging year for the manufacturing industry in general, with a volatile global economy, fluctuating prices and political uncertainty within the EU, and no apparent end to any of this.

During 2015, our main focus as a leader in the torque tool industry has been a carefully orchestrated ongoing plan of improvement and investment in both our people and our production capabilities. We've tried to ensure that customer benefit is at the forefront of everything we do, and the high level investments which we have made this year as part of our long term strategy have already exceeded expectations in this regard.

Examples of this include our two new state-of-the-art machines, the Mazak Vertical Machining Centre and the Citizen M32, both of which have greatly improved capacity and, as a result, are helping to reduce lead times which we know is of increasingly vital importance to our customers and distributors. (The picture shows the new M32 with me, setter operator Zul Hussain and Production Director Joe Ellera.) The Service Centre, our on-site UKAS accredited calibration laboratory, has seen a significant increase in business this year, and we have invested in new personnel, training and equipment. We view both the prior training that we offer to customers who purchase our products, and the subsequent top quality after sales service, including calibration and repairs, as part of our commitment to provide you with the fullest overall sales package on the market. Indeed, the Service Centre was initially set up following customer feedback.

This feedback is essential to the way we run our business, and earlier in the year you may have received from us a somewhat searching market research questionnaire in which we asked you to give us an accurate and detailed report on your dealings with us. It was a valuable exercise which, we were pleased to discover, contained much that reassured us that we are heading in the right direction. As a result of this, we are also looking at some areas which we think we can improve on still further, such as the way information is disseminated with regard to lead times. In a subsequent newsletter we will give you more detailed information about the survey and our resulting responses to it. Thank you to everyone who assisted us with this research; it helps us to understand your requirements, anticipate your needs and offer you a service tailored to the promotion of your business, which is after all the driving force behind everything we do.

2015 has seen growth in both our UK and export markets in spite of the well-documented economic challenges. We are predicting growth of 8% during the year, which is a significant amount when these challenges are taken into consideration, and means that we are able to end the year on a positive note. The export market is currently our strongest as the UK market remains turbulent due to many factors, including changes in MOD contracts and uncertainties in the oil and gas industries.

During my first nine months as Managing Director, it has become evident that the manufacturing industry is vulnerable not only in an unstable economy, but in such a competitive arena. This won't change, but competition is a great source of motivation. I am confident that all the measures and improvements that we are implementing will allow us to remain strong in a global market.

We've achieved a tremendous amount this year but we're constantly striving to improve, focus on customer demand and keep at the top of a fast-moving, high technology industry, while retaining the quality and reliability with which the Torqueleader brand has become synonymous.

So what are our plans for 2016?

Our main news, as you will already have heard, is that we are undergoing a rebranding exercise as part of our longstanding membership of the Gedore group of companies, and will become Gedore Torque Ltd from January 1st. You will have received our email about this at the end of November, but if you want to refresh your memory, click the link further down on the front page of the newsletter and this will give you all the details. You can be assured though, that as Gedore Torque Ltd, our ethos and commitment will remain as strong as ever while increasing our resources.

After a year of investment and consolidation, we will be concentrating on major research and development work in 2016. Our strong existing team has been further enhanced by three excellent new engineers, and we have some exciting ideas coming to fruition which we hope you will be as enthusiastic about as we are! You play a vital role in our product development with your feedback so please continue to pass on any comments; they are all genuinely welcomed and carefully considered.

Finally, on behalf of us all at Gedore Torque, we would like to thank you for your support during 2015, and wish you and your families a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.
